Essential Guide to Activating Your Lasting Power of Attorney: Stay Informed and Prepared

IMPORTANT LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY UPDATE

Are you an attorney on someone else’s Lasting Power of Attorney documents, or have you made and registered your own? If so, read on – this is IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YOU!

Activating Your Lasting Power of Attorney: Key Steps and Considerations

If you’ve recently received letters as an attorney on someone else’s Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) within the last year, it’s crucial to follow the outlined steps to activate the LPA. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Review the Letter: The letter you received will guide you through the activation process. It’s essential to read it carefully to understand your responsibilities and the steps involved.

  2. Online Activation: Use the activation key provided in the letter to add the LPA to your online account. This allows you to generate access codes for organizations, streamlining the process of managing the donor’s affairs.

  3. Enter the Correct Postcode: When activating the LPA, ensure you enter the postcode that was associated with you at the time the LPA was registered. If you’ve moved since then, you must contact the Office of the Public Guardian to update your address before proceeding.

  4. Generate Access Codes: Once the LPA is activated online, you can generate access codes for organizations that require access to the LPA summary. This digital approach is increasingly preferred by banks and other institutions for its security and efficiency.

For Older LPAs

If your LPA was registered on or after 1 January 2016, you can still apply for a new or replacement activation key using the LPA reference number.

This allows you to benefit from the online services and manage the LPA more efficiently.

For LPAs registered before 1 January 2016, you will need to use the paper document to show to organisations.
